Terry J. Johnston, 74, passed away on January 6, 2026.
Terry was born on June 25, 1951, in Pittsfield, Illinois, to Dean Johnston and Jean (Nash) Johnston. He dedicated much of his life to service, spending his career as a police officer before retiring from law enforcement. Even in retirement, Terry remained active and engaged, working at NAPA Auto Parts in Cloverdale, Indiana, where he enjoyed staying busy and connecting with others.
On January 19, 2008, Terry married Marsena (Bontrager) Johnston, who survives and shared his life with love and devotion.
Terry was a devoted husband, father, stepfather, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He is survived by his wife, Marsena Johnston; his daughter, Brynn Johnston; his stepchildren, Jody and Ward Townsend, Joshua and Toya Borders, Elijah Borders and Emily and Chris Trafny; his siblings, Kevin Johnston and wife Cindy, and Karen Schneider and husband Tom; and three nephews. He was the proud grandfather of six grandchildren and was blessed with one great-granddaughter, all of whom brought him great joy.
Beyond his work and family, Terry had a reflective and creative spirit. He wrote poetry throughout his life, using words to express faith, humility, and his desire to live with integrity. One of his poems reflects the heart by which he lived:
“When that day comes, I want my mind to be clear;
Not filled with uttered lies,
Not hurting those I held dear.
Then there will be no searching, for
Alibis, excuses and such;
For he knows the content of my heart,
What was there and how much.
If I lived, no condemnation will I hear.
If in my mirror I reflect;
The words ‘well done my son,’
I want to be said of me.
I cannot control what others think,
I cannot control what they do;
I can only live my life,
So father, I can be with you.”
